What if I told you there’s a family day out with enough to keep the kids and dogs entertained, and the only cost is a few coins for parking? Sounds too good to be true, right?
In an age where family days out can often feel like planning a small expedition, finding somewhere that offers genuine, wholesome fun without breaking the bank feels like striking gold. Well, we already knew it, but we found that pot of gold of a dog-friendly, family day out, and it’s nestled in the beautiful North East: Plessey Woods Country Park.
This past weekend, with two energetic kids and our equally enthusiastic pups, Buster and Wolfie, in tow, we set out for an adventure with no grand plans, just a hope for some fresh air. On a whim, after a quick stop at our caravan storage in Cramlington, the kids begged to go back to Plessey Woods. If you haven’t visited before, or even if you have, we highly recommend it!
Adventure Awaits: Woods, Water, and Whimsy
Forget a “walk in the park.” Plessey Woods is a full-on sensory adventure waiting to happen. It’s not just trees; it’s a living, breathing world where the air smells of damp earth and pine, the sunlight dances through the leaves, and the river’s whisper promises a new discovery around every bend.

From the main car park, we first entered a bustling clearing. Before we could even find the trailhead, Eddie was off, heading for the fantastic play park. Our journey into the forest was happily delayed by the irresistible lure of the play park and the ice cream van. Just as we thought we were back on track, a new obstacle appeared: the obligatory entrance photo. The mission to get to the woods was proving more difficult than we imagined, but we finally got on our way!
Passing over one of the many small bridges, the paths here are full of gentle slopes and flat sections, making them accessible for all ages, but with enough nooks and crannies to satisfy those craving a bit more of an ‘expedition’ feel. The River Blyth meanders through the woods, creating a number of idyllic spots to wade in wellies and play “pooh sticks.” The River was also a doggy paradise, with pups of all sizes happily splashing and retrieving sticks. From a safe distance, Buster and Wolfie watched with utter confusion, their expressions saying, “Why would anyone choose to go in there?”

There are some more challenging routes to tackle if you’re feeling a bit adventurous—I was not! Our kids loved clambering onto the slopes amongst the trees and scooting back down on their bottoms. We also had a fantastic time seeking out the unique sculptures along the various trails, like the totems and the infamous “Shrek’s toilet.” With vast spaces to have a picnic or just run around, this is the perfect place to let the kids, dogs, and grown-ups burn off some energy.
Plan Your Visit: Everything You Need to Know
- Parking & Costs: The car park is located right at the main entrance, making it super convenient. Parking charges are very reasonable: the first hour is free, followed by a small charge for longer stays. You can also grab an annual permit if you’re a regular visitor. Blue Badge holders park for free.
- The Visitor Centre & Café: The visitor centre is a great place to start your visit. You’ll find maps, local information, and a lovely café that’s perfect for grabbing a hot chocolate on a chilly day or an ice cream when the sun is shining. Be sure to check their opening times before you go, as they can be seasonal.
- Seasonal Delights: Plessey Woods is a beauty all year round! In spring, the woods are a carpet of wild garlic and bluebells. Summer offers lush green canopies and sunny spots by the river. Autumn is a fiery spectacle of colour, and in winter, a frosty walk is a magical experience. They also have seasonal events, so keep an eye on their social media pages or website for things like nature walks, trails, or other family activities.
