Tired of the same old staycations? The ones where the kids are glued to their screens and the biggest adventure is finding a decent signal? Trust me, I’ve been there. So, when we decided to pack up the caravan and head for Brighouse Bay Holiday Park, I was hopeful. Hopeful for some fresh air, a bit of peace and a whole lot of muddy knees.
And boy, did Brighouse Bay deliver. We must have been there about 5 times in the last three years due to the size of the park, the facilities and the peace and quiet!
What’s on Offer for Your Family?
Brighouse Bay is a bit of a chameleon. It has that country park vibe, with pitches sculpted into the landscape, surrounded by mature trees and stone walls. But it also has all the mod-cons you need for a family holiday.
The On-Site Fun:
- Pony Trekking: The kids’ eyes lit up when they saw the ponies. Nothing beats the old-school charm of a pony ride.
- Indoor Pool: Because let’s be honest, this is Scotland. The heated indoor pool, complete with a Jacuzzi and a separate toddlers’ pool, was a lifesaver on a classic “four seasons in one day” afternoon. The kids were in their element.
- The Beach: A short stroll through the woods brings you to the park’s own private, sandy bay. We spent hours here, building sandcastles, spotting crabs in the rock pools, and just letting the waves lap at our toes.
- Adventure Awaits: For the more active families (and my husband), there’s an 18-hole golf course, mountain bike trails, and a games room with mini bowling. There’s even a slipway if you’ve got your own kayak or boat!
Where We Stayed:
We have our own touring caravan, and the pitches were fantastic. They’re well-spaced out, in various different sections. They have all the hook-ups you could need, from electric to fully serviced. If you don’t have a caravan, they also have a selection of stylish lodges, some with their own private hot tubs (a bit of a bonus for Mum and Dad!). The site also offers glamping pods for a more rustic, yet cosy, experience.
Facilities
The new toilet block near the front of the park is perfect, the showers and toilets are clean and well maintained with good water pressure and hot water. I don’t think I have ever had a problem with these facilities however the other block which houses the laundry and has shower and toilets is not great. It was a bit smelly and dated and I have only ventured there once other than to use the washers which themselves are good and reasonably priced.
Extra bonus is the recently added (couple of years now) doggy wash area in the new block! This is a godsend after walks on the beach, catching crabs and throwing stones!
The park itself is always super clean, there are plenty of bins and I don’t actually recall seeing any rubbish anywhere.
Beyond the Park: The Local Gems
Brighouse Bay is the perfect base for exploring the Dumfries and Galloway region. It’s a quiet corner of Scotland that’s often overlooked, but it’s packed with things to do.
- Kirkcudbright: This “Artists’ Town” is a must-visit. It’s a proper working harbour with a colourful mix of medieval, Georgian and Victorian buildings. We loved wandering the streets, popping into the art galleries and enjoying a proper fish and chips.
- The Cocoabean Company: If you’ve got a chocoholic in your family (and let’s face it, who doesn’t?), a visit to The Cocoabean Company is non-negotiable. They have workshops where you can make your own chocolate creations, plus indoor and outdoor play areas. A surefire win.
- Cream o’ Galloway: Ice cream, farm animals, and play areas… what’s not to love? A great day out for all ages.
- Galloway Forest Park: This is a certified Dark Sky Park, which means on a clear night, you can see the stars like you’ve never seen them before. The kids were absolutely mesmerised by the Milky Way.

Final Thoughts
Verdict
★★★★
Brighouse Bay Holiday Park is a special place. It’s family-owned and that feeling of care and attention comes through in every detail. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, the facilities were clean and well-maintained, and the location is simply breathtaking.
Is it a high-octane, non-stop entertainment park? No, and that’s its strength. It’s a place for families to reconnect with each other and with nature. It’s about building dens in the woods, splashing in the sea, and toasting marshmallows under a blanket of stars.
We left Brighouse Bay with muddy boots, tired legs, and full hearts. We’ll definitely be back.

FAQ
Is there wifi?
Yes, free WiFi is available in the clubhouse and you can pay for wifi onsite but it can be poor depending on which pitch you have. Also phone signal is poor.
Is there an onsite shop
We are open from 8 AM to 6 PM, Monday to Saturday. We’re closed on Sunday. Holiday hours may vary, so please call or check our website for specific information on those dates.
Are the pitches level?
Ours was, and the ground felt firm and even. However there are others we have asked to be moved from due to the slopes or angles to get on to the pitch. We usually ring and request certain pitches that we know we like.
Is the site dog friendly?
Yes, with the enclosed dog area this is a very dog friendly site. They are also welcome in the Cafe area of the leisure suite but not the main entertainment space.
